Privacy Policy
Last updated 4 November 2026 · Wordburn for iPhone and Android (com.wordburn.app)
Wordburn does not collect your data. There is no server, no account and no analytics. Your videos, your audio and your transcripts are processed on your phone and stay there. The app uses the internet for two things only, both described below: subscriptions through the App Store or Google Play, and a one-time download of a speech model if you choose a language other than English.
What Wordburn does with your video
When you pick a video, or several, Wordburn copies it into its own private storage on your device, extracts the audio, and transcribes the speech using a speech recognition model that runs entirely on your phone. Captions are burned into the video on your phone as well. The same is true of batch captioning.
No video, no audio, no transcript and no part of any file you open is ever uploaded, transmitted, or shared with us or with anyone else. There is nowhere for it to go: Wordburn has no server.
Speech models
The English model is built into the app. The model for Dutch, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish is larger, so it is downloaded once, and only
when you choose one of those languages and confirm the download. It comes from Hugging Face
(huggingface.co), which hosts the official whisper.cpp models. Like
any web server, Hugging Face receives your device's IP address and the name of
the file requested; nothing about you, your videos or your transcripts is sent.
The model is stored in the app's private storage and can be deleted from
Settings → Languages.
What is stored, and where
Everything Wordburn creates is stored in the app's own private directory on your device:
- The copy of the video you picked
- Extracted audio and the transcript
- Your captions, styles and editing history
- Your personal dictionary
- App settings, and whether you have Wordburn Pro
- Your saved style presets and your batch queue
- A short log of what happened in the app — for example that an export finished, or which plan was chosen on the Pro screen. It never contains any video, audio, transcript or file name, it is never sent anywhere, and it is deleted with the app.
None of it is readable by other apps. Uninstalling Wordburn deletes all of it, and deleting a project inside the app deletes that project's files.
One exception is yours to control. If backup is switched on in your Android phone's settings, three small files are included in your own Google backup so they come back when you reinstall: your settings, your dictionary, and how many free videos you have used and which plan you have. No video, audio or transcript is ever part of that backup, and it goes to your Google account, not to us.
Two things leave that private directory, and only because you asked for them: a captioned video you export is saved to your device's photo library or gallery, and a subtitle file you export is saved to the Files app on iPhone or to your Downloads folder on Android. Both are then yours like any other file on your phone.
Information we collect
None. Wordburn contains no analytics service, no crash reporting, no advertising, no tracking of any kind, and no advertising identifier. The event log described above stays on your device. We do not know who you are, that you installed the app, or that you have ever used it.
Purchases
Wordburn can caption three videos without paying; their exports carry a small watermark. Wordburn Pro is an optional subscription, weekly, monthly or yearly, that lets you caption as many videos as you like, removes the watermark, and adds batch captioning and an unlimited dictionary.
Subscriptions are handled entirely by the App Store on iPhone and by Google Play on Android, including free trials, renewals and cancellation. Wordburn asks the store which plan, if any, this account has, and stores that answer on your device. We never see, receive or store your payment details, your name, your email address or your Apple or Google account. What the store collects when you subscribe is covered by its own privacy policy: Apple's or Google's.
Permissions
- Videos and media
- To let you pick the video you want to caption, and to save the captioned video back to your photo library or gallery. Wordburn reads only the file you pick; on iPhone it asks only for permission to add to Photos, not to read your library.
- Notifications
- To show progress while a transcription or an export is running.
- Foreground service (Android)
- To keep a transcription or an export running if you leave the app or your screen turns off.
- Internet and network state
- Used only to ask the App Store or Google Play about subscriptions and to download a speech model you asked for, as above.
- Microphone and Camera
- Never used. On Android they are listed on the store page because two of the open-source libraries Wordburn is built from declare them — one can record live audio, the other can capture a video in the picker — and Wordburn calls neither. It has no recording feature and no camera screen, so your phone will never prompt you for either one.
Children
Wordburn is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone, of any age, because we do not collect information at all.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date at the top. Material changes will also be described in the app's release notes on the App Store and Google Play.
